Blue Kōgai
A Kōgai is a long, slender hair ornament traditionally inserted horizontally into a topknot. Originally used as a hair-gathering tool, it was often depicted in Ukiyo-e prints and was a popular adornment for Tayū (elite courtesans).
Glass Kōgai resembling tortoiseshell were made during the Edo period and are displayed at the Nagasaki Museum of History and Culture. They were exceptionally beautiful—so finely crafted that they were nearly indistinguishable from genuine tortoiseshell.
Inspired by this, I asked for a blue blown-glass Kōgai made in Nagasaki. Ayato Takeda of Rurian Inc. created a remarkable piece, also crafted a matching blue blown-glass tea bowl called Eddy of Water.. This Kōgai is Blue—a symbol of love across the sea between the Dutch and Tayū, reflecting the deep gaze of a loved one’s blue eyes.
