扇子を収める袋は扇嚢(せんのう)と言いい私にはいわゆる刀の鞘のように思える。扇子の由来をこれまでお話ししてきたが、神様という意味も持つのだ。
この真珠扇子には特別の扇嚢を作った。
ハイビスカスと藍で染めた絹糸で与那国花織で織ってもらった。わざと裏返して布を使いまるで海のようなパターンだ。与那国織は全て草木で糸を染め、織る工程を一人の女性が仕上げる。江戸扇子と同じだ。扇嚢にもこだわるというのが粋、というものだ。

The bag that holds the fan is called a Sen-nou, which seems like the sheath of a sword. As I have told you about the origin of the fan, it would also mean a god.
For this Pearl Fan, I made a unique fan bag. I had it woven by Yonaguni Hanaori with silk threads dyed with hibiscus and indigo. The pattern looks like the sea by intentionally turning the cloth inside out. Yonaguni weaving is a process in which all the threads are dyed with plants and trees, and the weaving process is completed by a single woman. It is the same as the Edo fan.
It is in the aesthetic of “IKI”, (chic) which is also depicted to the fan bag as well.
